Platform Update · June 2026
Instagram Just Dropped Four Updates. Some of Them Are Genuinely Good News.
Per-slide captions, grid reordering, Instagram Plus, and a post timing myth officially busted.

Hey friend!
Instagram has had a genuinely busy few weeks and we wanted to make sure you had the full picture before this gets buried in your feed. We covered two of these updates on our Instagram already (links below) but here's everything in one place and what it actually means for you as a food blogger.

Per-Slide Captions on Carousels |
June 18, 2026 |
|
Each carousel slide can now have its own caption.
As of June 18th, Instagram now lets you add a unique caption to each slide in a carousel post. There's a simple toggle when you tap the caption area that switches between single and multiple captions. The caption updates dynamically as your viewer swipes through each slide.
For food bloggers this is a big deal. A recipe carousel can now have a caption under each photo that tells people what they're looking at: "this is what the batter should look like," "don't skip this step," "yes it's supposed to look messy at this point." That context used to have to live in one long caption that most people never read to the bottom of. Now it lives right where the reader's eyes already are.

37%
less often carousels are posted vs. single images, despite outperforming them on every metric

What this means for you
Carousels are already one of your best performing formats. Use per-slide captions to add step-by-step context, tip callouts, or a story that evolves as people swipe. Up to 20 captions on a single post.

Reordering Your Grid |
Rolling out now |
|
You can finally rearrange your profile grid without deleting anything.
Instagram is letting most of us rearrange posts on our profile grid without having to delete and repost. If you've gone heavy on one type of photo and want to break it up visually, or if you want a new post to sit next to something specific, you can now do that directly in your profile settings. One thing to know: you can't reorder pinned posts. Those stay where they are. But everything else is fair game.

Instagram Plus |
$3.99/month |
|
Instagram now has an optional paid subscription. The free version isn't changing.
Meta launched Instagram Plus at $3.99 a month. Instagram has confirmed the free version of the app is not changing. This is a 100% optional upgrade for people who want extra features, not a replacement for anything you're already using.

Our honest take
Not a game changer for most food bloggers. The 48-hour Story extension is probably the most useful feature here if you have a promo running or a post you really want more eyes on. Six pinned posts instead of three is worth noting if you're strategic about your profile. Everything else is nice to have but not essential. Don't feel any pressure to subscribe just because it exists.

Post Timing |
Confirmed by Mosseri |
|
You don't have to wait between posts. It's official.
This is less of a new feature and more of an official confirmation that a lot of people needed to hear. Adam Mosseri confirmed it directly: you don't need to wait for your last post to peak before posting again. Posts are ranked independently by the algorithm. Just avoid posting back to back within a few hours so you're not overwhelming your followers at once.

“You don’t need to wait for your last post to peak to post something else. Posts are ranked independently. Just avoid posting back-to-back within a few hours so you’re not overwhelming your followers.”

This is good news if you've been holding back posts because you were worried about splitting your engagement. You're not. Post when you have good content ready. The algorithm evaluates each post on its own.
